There are far too many to mention here, but to give you a flavour of the area, we'll share with you what we think are the must sees. Clovelly is one, which must be one of the few traffic free villages left in the UK - goods & people move by sled & donkey along the cobbled streets! This is the village that inspired Charles Kingsley to write "The Water Babies" & "Westward Ho!" which itself is another must see - 2 miles of magnificent sandy beach and cliff top walking. Nearby is the World Heritage Site of Braunton Burrows, designated by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve of international importance. For the young (and young at heart!), The Milky Way Adventure Park and The Big Sheep will provide many hours of entertainment, We think that Saunton Sands is one of the best beaches in the UK, and the beautiful fishing villages of Appledore and Instow are well worth a visit. If you like walking or cycling, then The Tarka Trail from the classic novel "Tarka The Otter" is a must - with over 30 miles of the trail between Meeth and Braunton on old railway lines making it a realtively level route. The 3 mile cliff top walk between Hartland Point & Hartland Quay offers dramatic coastal views across to Lundy Island, which can be visited by boat from the historic Elizabethan port of Bideford or from Clovelly. For quieter days out, visit Atlantic Shopping Village, Quince Honey Farm, or Dartington Crystal Factory. Slightly further afield, but just as exciting are the coastal resorts of Lynmouth and Combe Martin, or visit Exmoor, made famous by the novelist R D Blackmore in "Lorna Doone" |
